Torque
When we spoke about objects undergoing translational motion, we said that a net force is required to accelerate that object along some axis. But what exactly creates angular acceleration, thereby forcing the object into angular motion? The force acting on the object creates a torque, which in turn causes the object to rotate about an axis. The torque is the product of the force acting on the object and the lever arm. The lever is the perpendicular distance from the axis to rotation to the point at which the torque is acting. As discussed in the lecture, we can use three different equations to calculate the torque but note that these equations are actually identical in the sense that they provide us with the same exact answer.
