Oscillation of Spider Web Example
An insect with a certain given mass is caught on a spider web that begins to undergo simple harmonic oscillation the moment the insect lands on the web. In order to calculate the spring stiffness constant of the web, we need to assume that it obeys Hooke's Law, which implies that the restoring force created by the web will be directly proportional to the displacement of the web from its initial equilibrium position. If we equate the gravitational force to the product of the displacement and spring stiffness constant, we can then solve for the stiff constant using the given information.
