Latent Heat Example
A block of solid mercury is at some given temperature. Given the heat of fusion of mercury as well as the specific heat (heat capacity) of mercury, we would like to determine how much energy is required to bring the mercury from -39 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. There are two parts to this example: we must first determine the amount of energy required to completely melt the mercury (using the latent heat) and then we must determine how much energy is required to bring the mercury to the designated temperature (using the specific heat).
